“Turner’s recent installation Kokytus: River of Lamentation, 2023, 120″ x 214″, ink dyed wax paper, gold leaf, rose glitter spray and collage is case in point. As if echoing the German concept of ‘Gesamtkunstwerk,’ where various art forms are combined to create a single cohesive whole, Kokytus: River of Lamentation provides both the theatrical backdrop and protagonists of its own narrative… Turner subjects found materials to the outdoor elements and time, periodically adding material to the brew as if the artist has become a chemist or a winemaker. The result of this process is a strikingly consistent patina of time running through the work, as if each material were a worn yet cherished object.”

“As if dancing to the “visual music” of the wall collages above them, is a collection of antique shoe lasts arrayed on the floor. [Lasts are the solid forms on which shoes are molded]”  – Betty Brown Forgotten and Found: Nancy Turner’s Aesthetic Retrieval of the Lost and Abandoned

Also paying tribute to domestic rituals, is the largest of Nancy Kay Turner’s several fine works here, “Burnt Offerings.” Using parchment paper stained from the bread Turner baked on it during the pandemic, she adds gold leaf, glitter spray, vintage sheet music and paper tree bark among other materials collaging and painting them over the parchment. The rest is a series of overlaid impressions, both abstract art and moments of hope and sorrow. Like Biblical burnt offerings, the archival work traces a period of great loss and sacrifice and creates an almost holy elegy from the act of making bread. Turner’s work also has a sub-context of another burnt offering altogether, that of those lost to flame in the Holocaust and at Hiroshima.
